Default Convert your ashtray into a coin holder

If there is any part in my car that will never be used as intended, it is certainly the ashtray. I started placing my spare change in the ashtray. I found that coins tended to rattle around and I could not slide them out easily because they would get stuck on the chrome trim. Also the metal tabs to hold your cigarette would get in the way. Here's what I did:

I popped out the ashtray and removed the chrome trim by bending the tabs back. I used tin snips to trim away the two cigarette holders on the front. I filed back the sharp edges. At an art supply store, I bought a sheet of black felt with adhesive on one side. Trimmed the felt to fit inside the ashtray, then replaced the chrome trim.

Now when I place coins in the ashtray, they don't rattle when turning the car. When I need the coins I can easily slide them out. I have a useful storage compartment instead of a useless ashtray. I'll post a pic when I have a chance.

Default You did a nicer job, same idea

I did the same thing, but preferred a sponge rubber liner. I did not remove the tabs - not sure why, but didn;t want to destroy anything.

Default well, i actually stuck a coin holder in there just yesterday...more

this is actually on my 1.8 (waiting patiently...well, sorta...) i decided to pick up just a run of the mill coin holder from the local auto store, popped the ashtray out and checked to see if the plastic box would fit. it wouldnt, so i got rid of the flexible/unnecessary bottom platform, as well as the piece on the back. i then shaved the rear bottom of the box. it slid into where the ashtray snaps down, and is held by the metal leaf-spring on the bottom and the tabs at the back... i'll soon fill in the remaining space with something or other to make it look somewhat stock...i'll let everyone know what i do it with...

Default If the ashtray is removed entirely, you might be able to fit your sunglasses in there

That's what I have done and it works nicely, and I won't lose them/ always know where they are.
