Curious, what's the fine for having a radar detector in VA?
On my way down to NC last week there were so many speed traps on 81 that I decided to leave the V1 in place. Did the same on the return trip. I presume no confiscation and no transferrable points, just a fine, right? How much?

Well, generally they don't confiscate it...
but it's my understanding that it is well within their right to do so. But in the end, it's your property, and they don't have a right to keep it. They can confiscate it as evidence and make you come back down to reclaim it though.
As far as leaving it in place...the officer would probably frown on that, and may even insist you put it in your trunk. If you get pulled over a second time for the same thing, I'm sure you could get cited again for using the detector, and if they knew you got pulled over earlier in the day for the same thing, you could probably bet money that the officer would confiscate it the second time around.
Regardless, it's still cheaper than being nailed for speeding. 80+ buys you a reckless driving ticket on any 65 mph road. Just try not to do the obvious when you pick up a signal (brake hard, change lanes abruptly, etc). Shadow someone else, keep a good distance, and keep the detector out of site (which includes the use of a remote display). I like placing the detector up high on the windshield (and hardwired). It's a little difficult to see it behind the tint band at the top of the windshield. My window tint makes it a little harder to spot from the rear as well.

but they have to return it if they do. Even if you are a VA resident.
I've had mine hardwired on my passenger visor w/ remote display for the last 4 years while i've been in college in VA and never have been pulled over or had anyone notice it even when the car is parked

The kid that works next to me lives in VA.
He has gotten caught twice. Both times they took the radar dector and put it under his tire and made him pull forward and crush it. Then they gave him a ticket.
