In-dash Cupholder Repair
I haven't been able to find anything about this in the archives. My in-dash cupholder will no longer pop out when pushed. I'm guessing a spring is broken. Has anyone removed and replaced or repaired the in dash cupholder? Thanks in advance.

instead install a Passat usable cup holder ...
I did it, just 2 screws, that's it.

Re: In-dash Cupholder Repair
Make sure that the surrounding facia plate has not twisted and is stopping the cup holder from popping out.
Happened to me when several of the metal clips broke away from the back of the plate.

Here's how I fixed mine... quite easy actually...
When I bought my car the cup holder also would not spring back out and would not go in all the way. First remove the hazard trim and the cup holder. When I removed my hazard trim every single clip (the plastic that holds the metal clip in) broke so if this is the first time as well then expect quite a few to break. There is one cable to unplug that houses the LED. Once out you must start with the cup holder all the way in. Now if it will not go all the way in flip it upside down and shake it until the spring and roller fall out.
Now take a small screw driver and press on either clip and pry upward or push on the gear from the other side and pop out the resistive gear:

The gear side:

The gear removed:

Now with the gear removed we must pull out the inside to get to the spring location. Retract the cup holder and you'll see that there is a piece of plastic that keeps it from hyperextending. Pry up on the case like the pic below and slide out the inerds:

Now you should have the holder part separated from the case like this:

Now for the repair. The spring actually doesn't break but the plastic on the case that holds the spring in place. The spring placement should look like the picture below. I already fixed mine before I took all the pictures.
<img src="https://forums.audiworld.com/picture.php?albumid=87680&pictureid=152131">
You can see in the picture above that the slot on the left (where the left side of the spring seats) broke. It should look like the one on the right. I used epoxy and just glued the spring in the slot so it wouldn't fall out again. Now when you put it all back together make sure you have the innerds in the right direction and the roller inside of the spring. The picture below shows this roller and the slot that the roller spins in.

Now slide the inside into the case making sure the roller seats properly. Place the resistive gear back into place and you're done! It took me longer to figure out how to dissasemble the darn thing than fixing it.
