careful with carfax the info they give out...
is the same info the DMV will give you if you call with the vin #, for free!
all they check is the DMV title records.
check out http://www.vinhistory.com this site has a link into the insurance company system, and you will get a report as to if there has ever been a quote done through an insurance company for any vin #.

Don't assume that vinhistory.com and carfax.com have ALL the info. Having worked at an insurance co
(and its a big one), I can tell you that the only way the correct VIN info gets into these databases is if the adjuster (or support staff) enters the VIN into the insurance company systems. I have seen many many times when the adjuster did NOT enter the VIN, or did not enter the correct VIN, either because the info was not available to the adjuster, or because the adjuster simply didn't bother to update that claim's electronic file when the correct VIN became available. There are also times when cars that probably should have been "total losses" were not deemed total'd, because the car owner wanted the car repaired, and the adjuster (in a 3rd-party claim) wanted to keep the claimant happy in order to avoid a bodily injury claim. The result is that the subject car was not total'd, and was instead repaired. In fact, there were claims I saw where very little of any automobile info was included in a particular claim file, and the claim was simply settled in a lump sum, to include all property damage and bodily injuries. The adjuster's file was then closed, with essentially no info on the damaged car.
Anyways, you get the point. The carfax.com and vinhistory.com reports essentially rely on insurance company databases which are based on info that insurance adjusters enter. If the correct info is not entered somewhere (regardless of what the various States' insurance commissioners require), then the correct info will NOT show-up in the carfax.com and vinhistory.com reports; nor will the correct info show-up in any DMV (or BMV) reports.
Good luck.
