Default Driving Impressions: Mike 2KS4's Beast

Last night I was given a choice, one that would undoubtedly have a profound impact on my wallet in the years to come: to drive Mike's car or not to drive. I gave into temptation, lured to the darkside by the thought of those k04/16s. Here's my very unscientific testing, and I'll try not to ramble.

Summary: Fast, smooth, and a whole lotta fun

Ease of Driving: 4/5
If you don't step on it too much, you'd barely feel any difference from a Stage 1. No difference at idle and throttle response felt like stock. The main difference driving around was with the RS4 clutch he has installed. The point in the pedal's travel is slightly higher than stock and engages a little quicker as well. It's certainly not harsh and very easy to drive, which is what you would expect from a clutch designed for a production car. I have to strike one point here because of the cars' tendency to go into limp mode when accelerating in 5th and 6th from under 3k RPM and going WOT. I don't doubt that will be solved in the near future though.

Acceleration: 5/5
Things start to get interesting when you push the accelerator down a little further. Spool up time is very quick, about the same lag as what you can feel on a stage 1 car. What's different is the fact that you get the same great acceleration as stage 1's have in 2nd or 3rd at almost any speed, in any gear. Stepping on it at 100 and you still get pushed back. No top speed test was done because well, I wimped out. It was pulling hard still at 120 when I let off.

Overall: 0/5
Now I knew it was bound to happen, but I award Mike no points anyways. Why, because now I want K04/16s in my car. OK fine, some serious comments here... I've never driven a tuner's car, so I can't compare his homebrew solution to what APR / GIAC etc are doing with their K04 kits, but this is what I would want if / when I go down the stage 3 route. You can't help smiling after haven driven this car. Although the increased acceleration is great, what I think most impressed me is how smoothly the car runs. This is not a trailer queen car, its completely a daily driver.

Thanks again Mike for letting me take the Beast for a spin. Very impressed with what you have done to you car.

Default Can you please expand on this...

..."I have to strike one point here because of the cars' tendency to go into limp mode when accelerating in 5th and 6th from under 3k RPM. I don't doubt that will be solved in the near future though."

Why does this happen? I don't understand, thanks.

Default well I don't want to get this wrong

but if I'm saying this right, it happens when you go WOT in 5th and 6th that low on the RPMs. I believe the k04/16s flow so well it causes overboost and the ECU detects it and puts the car into limp mode. Hopefully I didn't screw up the condition.

Default OK, now go find some K04 cars to drive when you get a chance.

Helps to formulate comparision and opinions on the different options.

...and I have not driven a hybrid car yet.

Default Thanks for the kind writeup ;) Your explanation of the +dev is right on...

I'm probably going to mess with TCD settings and such, since I want to keep the N75 in. I could eliminate this tendency entirely by going EBC or putting the MBC in solo... but that'd be too easy.

It's just WOT in 5th or 6th at UNDER 3000 rpm. E.G. somewhere my car never is used, lol. So this isn't a "biggie". Yet, I'm STILL working on a solution to it!

Default Oh... and sorry for giving your car the full "baby seal treatment" on the highway last night ;)

It's still a very fast Stage1... and you were kinda asking for it
