Default DTS install

Anybody had install problems with a DTS on a 2002 S4?

I removed the DTS from my 2000 S4 and am now preparing to put it on my 2002. So, I went to get new subframe bolts (since the bolts are torque-to-yield and should not be reused) only to find that the part number for 2002 is different from 2000-1. They have to special order the bolts.

Hmmm. Just wondering what has changed. AWE doesn't know of any design change.

I'll have the parts on wednesday to compare with old S4 bolts.

Default I mentioned this way back when.

The subframe bolts are not reusable (see the service manual). The dealer is supposed to replace the bolts any time they loosen the cradle bolts (mine does). Proper torque is some number (which I can't rember at the moment) plus 1/4 turn. If you reuse the bolts they've already been stretched when they were originally installed so the installed torque will be wrong if you use them again.

Default Interesting... wonder what the ramifications of not doing that are?

There are a lot of DTS and UUC bars out there that are on cars that didn't have those bolts replaced.

Bolts torqued to improper levels.

Default Yep, my drivers side bolt made it a little more than 1/8th turn and stripped the captive nut in the

body.

sucked, a lot.

A new bolt probably would have stretched properly and not killed the threads...

or not, who knows? I guess I just got unlucky. Only cost I think $25 to have my mechanic fix it.

Default Hmm... do you have part numbers for the bolts?

Maybe I'll order a set and replace them...

Did you replace just the three smaller ones, or that big-*** one too?

The big one is the one that should be replaced. The small bolts are not torque to yield.
