Default ECU Reset

I've heard that you need to follow certain procedures to reset an ECU to ensure no damage. What's the best way to do this?

Thx

So should I disconnect the battery before unplugging ECU or is it ok to disconnect without?

Thx

Today by chance I opened the rear seat to check the battery and saw the ECU wasn't totally plugged then I pull it out and plugged it again I heard some sounds and warning lights which disappeared in few seconds but when started the car it took 8 seconds to start even had a feeling of start hesitation as the RPM goes slightly slow up then back down, any comment?
Thanks
