Default You don't really need a compound...

a compound takes down the clearcoat on the wheel (along with anything on top of it).

There are cleaners and solvents that can take off the stuff stuck to the wheel without taking the clear off. That's really what you need.

I've used Kaboom bathroom cleaner to clean the brown crud that accumulates on wheels during the winter. I usually save that for the spring cleaning before they get put away for the season.

Some of the wheel cleaners the local detailers use (Phil) are also pretty good and stripping off the caked on muck that most cars accumulate. Ask Phil what he uses for bad cases.

Default One more thing...

if you're using aggressive brake pads that dust a lot, you have to clean your wheels often. Some pads release some nasty brake dust, which when combined with water, will make quite a mess of your wheels. Gotta wash them frequently to prevent problems.

Default In re: wheel wax...

I've used this for the past 3 years when swapping summers/winters. It's good stuff...easy on and off. Smells like bananas. (Not that that has anything to do with quality...but I was feeling descriptive.)
