electrical types: pics showing guts of abs unit
After having no luck at the junkyard today I figured I'd do some surgical dissection and see what's in there.

Cool. Those can thingys are electromagnets that activate the valves in the hydraulic control unit.
Ford uses bosch on a lot of it's cars and that unit looks identical to the ones late model Mustangs get. Obviously your problem was the hair shorting out the two chips
An unfortunate part of the design is the integrated abs power relay. It can't be replaced separately.

It really surprises me that those diodes aren't soldered in
They appear to be clipped in to make them easy to replace. I wonder if they fail often, or if they did that for easy hand installation.

I'm wondering....if we could figure out what component in there commonly fails, and under what symptoms.....could we order the replacement(hopefully updated) parts from bosch?

I beg to differ
They're very much look clipped in. At the ends of the leads they are touching the contact on one side, and then closer to the diode there is a plastic tap on the opposide side which helps press the lead against the contact.
But maybe there's just not enough resolution in the picture to see it closely enough.
Oh well, not worth arguing about .

Honestly, it probably wouldn't be worth it. Troubleshooting could take days...
Not to mention problems with Bosch custom components not available through distributors...
And if the problem is in that sealed/insulated PCB, it's gonna be even more difficult. Those are generally not considered serviceable. And that PCB is definitely Bosch specific.

Check this out. I see a 45 degreeish angle of a solder bead ;)

If I were to uninstall mine and reinstall another half, like you were planning on doing
Do i have to recode anything or reinstall any "softcodes", or is it a plug and play type deal? I found another ABS unit for $150 but its gonna cost me over $200 to get the pump installed. I'm not a good enough mechanic to be bleeding brakes myself... but if i could just install half of it and have it work, that would be much easier.
