Engine ticking after oil weight/brand change....... (semi-long)
For my last oil change I decided to try a different brand and weight oil. Previously, I always used AMSOIL 0w-30 without problem. This time, I tried Redline 5w-30 based on positive feedback from others running it. It was fine for about 5k but slowly I started to hear a ticking sound get louder and louder after the oil warmed up. By 5.5k it was downright loud - in fact, it sounded like an exhaust leak, but I couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from.
So, I decided to try an oil change, since it was due, before taking it in to get the noise diagnosed. I decided to go back to AMSOIL 0w-30 to see if that might make a difference. Low and behold - it did. The noise is completely gone and has been for 1k miles.
I don't know why this would make such a difference in my car, especially since others, such as ryanS4, have actually reported less engine noise/ticking with 5w-30 than 0w-30... *shrug*... YMMV.
DISCLAIMER: I have absolutely no affiliation with AMSOIL (or any other oil co.).

At temp, the 0w, 5w distinction is not really important...
...it's the w30 part that counts. I had lifter ticking with Royal Purple 5w30 myself. It appears that in general, Amsoil's 0w30 is good enough to prevent that. I've been happy using Mobil One 0w40 though, and have never had an issue, and oil analysis was good after 6500 miles at my last change.

Noise is due to sticking lifter - due to dirty oil.
with hydraulic lifters - they compensate for oil weight and wear.
I would be changing my oil more often than 5K - expecially if I had twin turbos.
Actually - I do change it more often - and I don't have twin turbos

well, never had that problem with Amsoil at same intervals....
synth should be good for that long, from what I've heard & read.

You are correct. You can go longer intervals between changing
with synthetic. Not sure why the lifter(s) would start ticking with the change- Red Line is good stuff, and I wouldn't think the change in weight would be a big deal. I do know that Amsoil is firking awesome stuff, and that quelled the noise, I'd stick with that.
