Default Follow up to timing belt service done yesterday. Shop told me that belt was close to breaking.

I had my 80k service done yesterday and also did the timing belt and other related items since the front had to come off for the serpentine belt. When I went to pick the car the mechanic showed me the timing belt and it looked pretty worn and had some cracking. He said that when he took off the front end the belt was very loose and if I had gone another 5-10k miles, it probably would have snapped.

I was never a believer in the old 60k miles change even though the book says 105k but now I'm rethinking that. Maybe I'll be doing it again before 150k miles.

The book says 105k, but the underhood sticker says 75k

Default my belt looked pretty good for 65k miles

The belt actually looked good. I inspected every inch looking for nicks or anything else. I found some rub marks on the engine below the teeth of the belt. It appears the tensioner gets weak (or is weak) and allows enough slack in the belt to allow some contact.

I imagine the rubbing caused by slack in the belt and shock loading when the belt tightens up could cause it to break.

The timing belt kit is a *few* dollars cheaper than a new engine or heads

Default Yup, he was good. He took some pictures of my front end all taken apart.

My girlfriend was laughing because he was getting all excited about working on the car when I dropped it off. At least I know he loves his job and would take good care of my car so I had no problems leaving it with him overnight. I had to drop it off Sunday morning and I picked it up Monday afternoon.
