VERY expensive if it goes (interference engine). Replace it - better safe than sorry.

Well, the timing belt on my '00 A6Q just snapped at 52K miles, 2 years and 9 months old. Totally unreasonable. I am currently negotiating with Audi about repairing this. I will *NOT* foot the bill for this myself.
