FYI - HID Story on NBC Nightly News w/ Tom Brokaw tonight
#5
Evidently there have been recent comaplints about the 'safety' of HID lights...
...both from the driver's and other motorists' perspectives. There was a link posted a few days ago to a USA Today article that discussed the issues.
Personally, I think it's partly the same thing that happened about 15 (20?) years ago when Halogen lights were first introduced. They were brighter and different than the other lights on the road and some people found them distracting. (Get used to it!). Now the arguments against HID lights include:
1. Too bright (Ricers with overpowered blue halogen bulbs, maybe?)
2. Can't be seen very well from the side... (so? That's what corner and side markers are for!)
3. Distracting Color (Different than all the yellow oncoming lights. People used to single out the halogens, too.)
4. (From the drivers perspective) Too sharp a cutoff between the light and dark.
The NHTSA is getting involved, to the point where they're talking about banning the lights and forcing retrofits of standard halogens (!)....

"They will have to pry (these lights) from my cold dead hands!"
They should really focus on other things like, hell, anything else! There are so many safety issues in regards to POS vehicles on the road, people don't like the idea that, "for a limited few, limitless thrills" does not include them.
When you consider the safety from being able to see in bad weather with HIDs, especially with the race-inspired tires that cars like ours have, we increase our awareness of the road in front of us, thus allowing for a more controlled brake.
