but then if they don't hear it when looking at the car...they generally don't replace it

Sorry, I was out of town, the Noise is a muffled Diesel sound. When I went to look at the car when they where fixing the engine they had a A6 2.7 in there that they were working on and they where also changing the water pump. I asked if the car had the same problem. THe Mechanic said that they change them when they do service on them. So it looks like Audi Knows of this problem and they have been having the Dealer replace them while they are under warrenty when you go in for service. You may want to check with the dealer to see if they have been replaceing them around your area.
