Default Greedy...Greedy...Greedy (longish)

I am thinking (very seriously) about trading in my '00 Sedan for an '01 Avant. Took delivery of current S4 in May and Paid MSRP ($41,000 incl. options/delivery, excl. taxes). Want to trade ASAP, but realistically probably looking at Feb/Mar '01 before an Avant is available.

Here's the initial offer on a trade in from Barrier in Bellevue, WA.--$32,000!!

By my calculations:

Barrier profit on orig. '00 S4 purchase - $4,300 + holdback and dealer incentives, etc. = at least $5,000.

Barrier profit on new '01 Avant - $4,600 + holdback and dealer incentives etc. = again $5,000 plus.

Trade in - There is no way they will retail my '00 S4 (immaculate / stock / less than 8K miles) for less than $40,000 - $42,000 (West Coast / Seattle prices--Salesman proudly told me a month ago they sold a used '00 S4 for $44,000+). After dealer costs, they're easily looking to make $6,000 - $8,000 net profit based upon the current trade-in offer of $32,000--more than the original sale and after churning the same car/me twice!!

Oh, by the way I'm not only a repeat (S4) customer, but also offering to place an order on '01 TT 225 Roadster at the same time as the Avant........

Am I missing something here? Thoughts, suggestions?

GREEDY, GREEDY, GREEDY, AUDI DEALERS.......

Yes, sell it yourself. It's not real hard...

FYI...Audi doesn't offer their dealers "hold backs" or additional incentives as many others do.

Default might try UAV

you might give university audi a try. I asked about trading for an avant and they stated that they had given $36k trade-in for a '00 s4 with 5k miles a month or so ago. factoring in the tax savings, that's like selling it for $39k yourself. Take that with a grain of salt though. You'll have to talk to the used car manager to find out what the current rate is.

I haven't had much success dealing with barrier. I got on the avant list earlier in the year and am 2nd or 3rd but have yet to hear anything from them. If I go with an avant instead of the m3, I'll probably buy it elsewhere. I really hate barrier's practice of requiring 10% down when ordering. I don't know of any other dealer that does this...and gets away with it...

good luck

Default Thanks, will plan on talking to UAV--was hoping the customer loyalty thing was worth something (m)

but maybe not. I totally appreciate the sales trade-in / sales tax benefit and that's why I would prefer to trade (plus convenience, of course), but at Barrier's starting point a deal seems unlikely.

Re your comment about deposit--if I buy Avant and a TT they'll only require a 5% deposit on each.......what a deal.....

Alan... do yourself a favor and get a second opinion... Call Brian Landreville (my saleman at univ.) at 206.755.1633 tell him about your situation and I guaruntee he will hook you up. He is always looking for an excuse to steal a barrier customer!! He will treat you right! Plus I would almost guaruntee that he could get you both the S4 avant and the TT much faster than barrier. Tell him I sent ya.

Default You can't get retail dollars from a dealer...go AutoTrader & you'll get your dough. (m)

If, however, you're not interested in qualifying people & letting the odd person drive your car...kiss that extra few grand away because that's what car dealers try to do...make money on EVERY transaction. Crazy eh? Invest all that dough & expect a return every step of the way! ;-)

To give you an idea;

When I ordered my S4, I had a highly modified 95 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD.
The best offer I got from a dealer was $15,500 CDN. I sold my car in 2 weeks for $22,500...to a guy who I'd met at the performance shop that I had all of my work done at.

You find the right buyer, you'll get near the same money that the dealer would.

Default Greedy...Barrier...Greedy...Barrier

2 months ago, barrier had a USED S4 for $5,000 over sticker. The car had over 7K miles on it. The sales guy also bragged to me how they had a $60K markup on the new 911 Turbo on the floor. I don't do business with people who TELL me they are screwing there customers.
