Hella 100w HB bulb upgrade (impressions)
well, after a total PITA install (need small canrney hands) I have to say that this was, dollar for dollar, the best mod yet.
the improvment in the both throw and color temp of these 100w high beam bulbs is amazing. i went for a canyon run last night and was blow away by how much better i could see. my only concern is regarding the additional stress on the wiring harness, but i think for the limited use they'll see (mostly for blind turns, etc) it will be fine.
best $20 you can spend!

That's interesting-
I've changed the HIGH BEAM lamps on all of my German auto's (Since early '70's) with 100W bulbs and have NEVER had issues-This was done on VW's, Audi's BMW's and Merc's....
No issues ever.

That's *your* experience. Wiring harnesses are designed for ~55 watts. But Germans overengineer...
...and make their wiring more tolerant when compared to other car manufacturers. Also, you are using these bulbs in your High Beams, which are used sparringly compared to the Lo Beams. Hence why you haven't had a problem.
Just because you can do it doesn't mean it's recommended or that others won't have problems.
The fact remains, our wiring harnesses are not designed to take almost double the load. With prolonged use, something will probably go wrong.
My point is, and I agree, I have used 85 to 100 watt bulbs in the high beams; but you should not endorse nor recommend it to others because it's not prudent.
I know many people with other car makes that have melted their housings and/or wiring harnesses; so I think we should be careful with our recommendations and experiences. :-)
