tap on the back of the tire with a rubber mallet, have someone else hold the wheel and spin it

Default one of these two always works for me...

loosen but don't remove lugs, then drive slooowly and slam on brakes, or lift the car slightly off the ground, then lower it back down.

Default I've had that happen plenty of times...

Turns out that the hubcentric ring wasn't exactly "flat". That is, one end was seated in a little further inside the wheel than the other. What a nightmare.

It took me an hour to get it off.

If you notice, one end of the wheel will rock back and forth. Being gentle did not do the trick for me. So I just hit the backside of the wheel with a rubber mallet and then yanked the wheel off as hard as I could.

What a PITA. That hubcentric ring is fairly tight. I would promptly take a dremel to the hubcentric ring and take away just a hair of some material on the outside circumference and the inside so the hubcentric ring slides in and out of the wheel.

take all the lug bolts out but leave one in. Loosen the last one but dont take it all the way out. Then from the back side tap the tire only with a dead blow hammer or a rubber mallet. The lug bolt will keep the rim from falling off the car and scraping it.
