High mileage s4 any major problems
I am wondering how many miles do u think the s4 engine and body are good for before u are going to have major problems? I am asking this because I have a 2002 s4 and was thinking about going full stag 3 and upgraded suspension but am thinking of selling it instead. If I took that money I got from selling my car I could get a older s4 with high mileage and pull the engine and go full stage 3 for about what I would get for selling my car. Other then the turboes, which i would replace anyways, what is bad about a 100,000 mile s4. I would replace turboes, fueling, suspension and all the smaller stuff that most people dew when they go stage 3 when the engine is out. Let me know what u guys think bad I idea to dew stage 3 after 100,000 or not?

the last stg3 car i did had 90K+ miles , I have also done a full AWE stg3 on a 120k miles car .
the car has 144k on it today and its running strong .
just make sure you do a leak down before you go stg3 .

My take on the whole situation.
I recently crested the 100k mark and prior had debated going back to a Legacy Turbo, or sticking it out and making this what I wanted. I chose the latter. From the ~90k mark till present here is a list of parts I have replaced or will. (Food for thought, I am a bit late on some of this stuff, actual milage may vary)
-Timing belt and water pump replaced
-Turbo hoses replaced
-Throwout Bearing (currently going bad, have clutch, PP, TOB and Pilot bearing awaiting install, just need to clear out friends garage)
-ABS Control module (is failing/failed, devoting $$ to clutch first)
-02 sensors (replaced 3 of the 4, one front, 2 rear)
-possible headgasket/turbo issue (periodic white smoke at startup, rare and random. Leak down test this weekend)
-Door handle spring
-instrument cluster LCD starting to dim
Ummmm, yeah... I *think* thats it..
Still love her and wouldnt trade her for anything, just wish the issues were more spread out.

The engine and body will hold up fine for another 100K...
assuming the car is presently in tip top condition. It's all the little stuff that will kill you. AKS4's post is an example, though probably the tip of the iceberg. You'll probably notice the car sapping a few hundred a month in "normal" maintenance costs, depending on how many miles you're piling on in a week.

I agree with AKS4 - it's the little things that will kill you. I have 123,000miles on mine...
Stage III since 87,000miles.
Bought it new (well it had 49miles on it).....
IMO, once you fix the weak points in the system (ie: TBB, BPV, ? turbos) then you have a truly bullet proof motor. The little things aren't too bad IF you fix some of them yourself or get to know local Audiworld-ers who can help you.
It's fun to trouble shoot stuff and fix it yourself. If you have no desire to wrench yourself, I'd stay away from a high milage S4 (unless you have deep pockets).

Re: My take on the whole situation.
thanks for all the info i was just thinking if i did this i would go with new clutch new turbos and hoses do the timing belt and water pump when the engin is out so it seems like that would take care of most of the major problems that the s4 has.
