Default How do you check to see if your engine mount is broken?

As most of you know, my snub mount took a dump sometime this week. I am getting it replaced tomorrow at AMS.

One thing that rose my concern is the fact that It might have caused some damage to the engine mount as well. I want to know the symptoms of a broken motor mount.

Default Open your hood, stand on the engine and rock back and fourth...

...I know this is not orthodox and you'll look sillier than Pee Wee Herman on crack, but it's worth a try!

j/k ;-)

Seriously, when the drive train goes underload or off load (or even if you just rev the motor), sometimes you can feel a slight movement or clunk as the engine might shift ever so slightly. I had this happen and felt it on my Acura Integra.

I get that now because my snub mount is busted.

Default Put the car on ramps, pull the belly pan, and benchpress the engine.

Seriously

With the belly pan off, look for the big bell shaped mounts on either side of the engine near the front sway bar. If you're not burly use a jack to lift the engine and see if the mounts move, if they are really bad you'll see the cracks right away.

Default Actually...

after posting that, I could not remember if it was my 16V GTI or my Integra (so long ago and all the cars I've had). I was trying to remember if it was my Integra or not. Either way, when we were changing out the starter, which helped to hold the motor in place and acted as a mount of sorts, we did not use a jack to hold up the motor, so when the start came off, the motor droped a litte and to fast which strained and cracked one of the other more major mounts.
