Default I was belching black smoke tonite....

after picking up a friend and doing some easy driving, we're heading out to dinner. I've had the car running for ~25 minutes, it's all warmed up, and it's very cool outside (probably 63). A newer 5series with fake M5 wheels and M5 front and rear valences (but stock weeny exhaust, looked awful, but I digress) gets on my *** and obvioulsy wants a run, so I take off easily at a light, get around traffic in 2nd gear, and as I'm getting into it (half throttle maybe) I notice black smoke starts billowing out the back. After that initial puff it backs off, but it's still coming out. A couple more runs and it does the same thing. At least the slow 5series was nice enough to let me use his headlights to see my smoke, haha.
I know this is a rich condition, but WTF would cause it to belch that much? The car has done this a few times that I'm aware of, last one was after I'd been doing 70mph for a while in 90 degree heat and had to get on it all of a sudden. Same results though.
Neither time did I notice the car being any slower than it should be. Hmmmm.
I'm currently at 34K miles, on first set of spark plugs, and mods are listed in my sig (add 710N's to that list also). I'm a little freaked out by this, and currently am VAG-less... Ideas?

Default Me, too...

Was driving home tonight and my girl was following. In second gear, I got on it pretty hard to pull away from a Camaro trying to slide past me. At the next light, my girl pulled up next to me and told me that when I gunned it, black smoke came out of my exhaust in 'puffs.'

What exactly is that? Is it an indicatiion of anything bad?

Thanks.

Default could be given the right conditions...

in general that's a rich condition, but too much of that is obviously a bad thing. Could be as simple as that. I think it also could be a knock sensor picking up pinging, so it pulls timing and I think you'll get the same result.

Odd thing for me is that it was chilly outside, so everything shoulda bene good to go. I was putzing along for a bit in traffic just before I got on it, so maybe heat soak had already got me and the ECU was pulling timing. If that's true then the IC system we have is a major weak link and I need to fab some misters ASAP.

I just hate not knowing what's going on. On an NA car you can check the basics like spark plugs, cap/rotor, MAF or whatever the other one is. Turbo cars kinda scare me when belching black smoke.
