Default i don't mean to start another chip war...

but can you guys clear this up...

about a month ago i talked to someone (don't remember name) at a local get-together about chips...basically he said that my GIAC X makes so much boost that it makes the timing retard. retarded timing -> less power. question 1: is there any truth to this?

seeing as how i was just 0wn3d by the turbo lady, my second question is this - is there a chip that makes its power not with insane boost but with more advanced timing...or a healthier balance of the two. i don't mind losing a little power if it means an increase in reliability.

Default that person is confused in general

what he said makes no sense and is wrong...

anyways aside from the x-chip most of the chips are conservative in timing...mtm and apr are notorious for having lower boost (though it isn't much)

Default MTM may be what you're looking for.

It is one of the most conservative chips (as far as making boost) but gives even more power than some more agressive chips. It also tends to cut power above 5500rpm to save the turbos, so bear that in mind if you need big power all the way to redline. I can also say that's its power delivery is just as smooth as stock (to me)

Default That person gave you incorrect information.

If a car is in proper mechanical condition, the X-chip will not do like he has said. If you really want to keep your turbos as healthy as possible while chipped.....make sure all your hoses are intact, get a boost gauge so you can monitor boost behavior on a regular basis and do proper warm up and cool downs.

Default why don't people use boost controllers on the s4?

it's one of the best and first ways of making extra power on the 3/s and dsm platforms. Set your own, monitor everything, and no worries about the ECU jacking up the boost past safe levels (granted you can do that yourself with a bc, but still...)

Default I wonder how true that is...

The S4 ecu in a lot of conditions doesn't seem to care one way or another how much boost you're making. Watch boost logs of a stock software S4 with an exhaust -- it overboosts almost continuously. Thats why the UrS4 N75 works on stock cars -- the ECU doesn't care that you're generating too much boost until you trigger some point that makes it go into limp mode.
