...one magazine I read last year did a comparison of the 1997 911 Turbo and the 959 Sport and found that while the 959 edges out the 911 by about 0.2 0-60 and in the quarter, the 911's more advanced improvements in braking and handling made up for that difference (i.e., the 911 actually handled and braked better). I do remember, however, that the 959 would cook the 911 on top speed since it actually had more power and better aerodynamics.

DOH! This should be down under the 959 thread under "best car in the world" post.

Didn't the 959 lower itself at high speeds? It had all sorts of crazy tech at the time.

Yeah, I think it had 3 adjustable ride heights. It also had tire pressure sensors, magnesium alloy wheels and some other stuff I can't remember. I wish I'd saved at least some of my good car magazines from when I was in high school. The only thing I remember about the 959 Sport model was that it had no A/C, so I guess it really wouldn't see much use for about 8 months of the year here in Houston. That article I read last year mentioned how they don't believe a single one had actually even made it into the United States, but not for a lack of trying. Bill Gates reportedly had one, but couldn't get it into the U.S.

Default Some did make it in...

I was working at the GM's Milford Proving ground the summer of 88, and one day I was coming off a test loop in a '93 F-Car mule and parked in from of the engineering building was a 959. Needless to say, I got out and starting giving a a good look- this being the proving grounds, it wasn't even locked (although no keys). After about 10 minutes of this, an admin from the building comes out to see what I'm doing - apparently she had the job that day of "watching" the car. Never saw it again, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's somewhere in the GM family...

Default "GM Family"

There is no "GM" family GM's not like Ford where the families of the founders (Durant, et. al) still have significant stakes (or any.) Besides which, GM was a conglomerate from the start...whereas Ford just started as Ford.
