Default installing schrader valve connections on ohlin dampers

I went to a dyno right beside Race Prep Motorsports in Virginia Beach, VA. They race porsches in the grand-am series. The guy there said they used to run ohlins and he asked if I checked the nitrogen pressure lately because they had to check and top theirs off every week.

My dampers do not have a schrader valve connections. I don't recall which brand of shocks they have on their porches, but they do have schrader valves on the ends of their reservoirs, in the same location where mine only have a screw.

He said ohlins sells some sort of kit to install the valve. Once I get them installed he said they could check and charge the nitrogen. Any thoughts?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schrader_valve

Default I thought that they did have a valve under a small cover ???

There needs to be some mechanism to check the pressure and add nitrogen.

Remember, there are lots of different models of Ohlins damers. Maybe what they used was different to what we are using?

Why not ask STaSIS their opinion of this?

Default I would also ask STaSIS how much pressure they run.

As this may not be an issue for you. In Penskes we run between 125 and 175 PSI depending on the application. I guess STaSIS runs less. This may make the Nitrogen escaping issue less of a deal.

Bilsteins run A LOT of pressure, and they seem to last...

Default Not possible to use a schrader on the Ohlins

First of all you are talking about 2 very different types of dampers. Some Penske and Motons have Schrader valves on them, Ohlins do not. The engineers at Ohlins prefer the needle type valve for their dampers. Basically they are filled much like a football - nitrogen is injected into the reservoir (about 150psi) using the special fill tool supplied by them, then the diaphram is sealed with a small oringed screw. The Ohlins are also much less sensitive to canister pressure than other types. The pressure is there mainly for temperature stabilization. They will perform at 9/10's even fully depressurized.

Default OK, I guess I'll leave them alone:)

I have no complaints on how the ohlins ride. I couldn't see a sticker on the porsche dampers. I think they were blue or purple-ish color, but were very dirty from racing. Maybe motons?

I'm getting the race prep motorsport guy to corner balance and align my car in the next week or two. I'll let him know the ohlins don't need any tweaking. thanks
