I wonder if his <a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VAG-COM/message/1134">offer</a> still stands?

forget it. this is the LAST feature tuners want to see gain popularity or even awareness by buyers
it would directly cut into their business model of a chip as a shrinkwrapped product.

Even if they did the cost would not go down
They have to recoup development and other costs. So if it's just software they would sell to reflash they would charge the same. Do it yourself programmer I think should be prepared to replace some expensive parts. Tempting though.

No, cost absolutely would go down...
Know that $495 that most people spend on a spare ECU? Not needed if you are flashing the ECU via the VAG port. If you were concerned about dealers, you'd flash back the stock programming. No screws were touched, no ECU case was opened. Flash it back when you're done.
The issue isn't (as the other post suggested) an issue of copying the code off the ECU and being resold -- thats pretty trivial to do. Anything a computer can access internally can be read by other hardware too. Its really a copy-protection issue. They don't want you to be able to plug your programmer into your friends car and flash it with the program too.

Yep, too bad we don't have "shrink-wrapped" cars. Different ICs, different N75 states, different
in enough ways that specific tuning on a dyno and on the road is always gonna be better. If the code was broken by Uwe or someone else who isn't a tuner, with some tuning interface software, other local tuners could work on it. We could also share base-line maps to start from. Don't get me wrong, I dig most of the GIAC, Abt, and Apr programming, but its not specific and it gives me NO flexibility in tuning. K04s can suck it, and I'll find my own injectors dammit.
