Interesting Statement by Mike S
This seems to have a lot of truth to it. Our pig is bloated which increases comfort for street driving but underneath, stripped down, does lie enormous potential for a race car.
About the S4: "...it's makes a fine race car as well (as a street car). It's just not a good track car.
It needs to be a race car, or a street car.
Too many people want it to be both, which is tough to do with this car.
You can't get enough weight out of it to make it light enough for the track but still liveable on the street, and the faster you make it, the more the "pork" becomes an issue.
In Champions hands, the S4 was more succesful than full race Z06's and GT3's, so it can be a very effective race car."

but it is very possible to build a very streetable S4 that will also function as a respectable track
car. You just have to accept that you won't be hanging with any stripped, fully sorted track-only cars. So I do have to disagree to some degree. There are plenty here who drive their S every day and also use it for the track on weekends and do just fine.

I'm 50/50 (comparo inside)
Obviously the current resale value of the B5 S4 makes it a very attractive candidate for a track *****. Matter of fact the initial purchase price is less than an Evo or STI.
Track times from "time trial" the other weekend at CA Speedway:
My car (TT B): S4, no rear interior, half cage, extensive suspension mods, no aero, DOT R-compound tires, 3200lbs.
Evo 8 (TT Unlimited, +2 classes): completely stripped, composite panels, engine mods unknown, minor aero, full cage, extensive suspension modifications, full slicks.
Evo 8 (TT C, -1 class): mods unknown, some interior removed, DOT R-compound tires.
STI (TT A, plus 1 class): some interior removed, some engine and suspension mods, not sure about tires, etc...
Saturday times:
S4 - 1:55.24
Evo unlimited - 1:53.91
Evo C - 1:58.14
STI - 1:57.55
Sunday times:
S4 - 1:52.56
Evo unlimited w/ different driver - 1:51.88
Evo C - 1:55.82
STI - 1:57.28
I would think my car is somewhere in between the two Evo's mentioned above as far as modifications and expense incurred. I think dollar for dollar I would be slightly faster than the Evo that runs in unlimited.

picture of Evo 8 that runs in Unlimited
