Its not a dedicated track car...
So its partly about weekend stylin'. The car's got all the class of... well... a Porsche, the sound of an angry Harley, the handling of a Porsche (ie, handles really well as long as you don't screw up). It doesn't have the same stiffness/tightness that some of the later suspensions have, but thats just a matter of picking up used suspension components from later model 911's. (And getting new Koni's on the front -- I've got a half upgraded suspension right now) All the later model suspension components generally fit, for the most part. Parts are comparably cheap because I've got 40 years of cars I can buy used parts from. The fact that I'm not restoring it makes it easier. '68 was a unique year and a lot of parts if I wanted them concours would cost a fortune, but I've got no problem with getting 70's or 80's interior parts, for example.
With the exception of the MR2, none of those cars I'd enjoy driving for the sake of driving it. Thats a big plus. This stupid ignition problem I'm having aside, its also a very simple car. The entire wiring diagram fits easily on a sheet of paper, the mechanics are simple, etc.
If I wanted a dedicated track car, it probably would've been either an Impreza or a civic. (I want to do more racing, and I'm undecided if I want dirt or tar as its primary venue).

Hard to tell... its got 1st generation tail (ie, no "PORSCHE" reflector...)
So its 60's or early 70's... Nothing before 69 had a flared rear like that, so its a pretty narrow 4-5 year range, unless it just had a lot of body work done.
A cool thing about hte 911 is any model year from 65-89 most of the parts are interchangable. If I decide high-revving low-displacement isn't what I want, I just have to find a used 2.7, or even a 3.6 to drop in there. A few bolts, some spliced wires and off it goes. Especially when the chassis is emissions exempt... rip all the electronics off a 3.6, drop the webers from my engine on there, and hear the baby ROAR. ;-)
