Default Looking to buy. A little help please...

Newbie to the board here and currently selling my 99M3. I need a 4-door, 4-season car with the performance I am used to. S4 it is!

I am looking at a Pearl 2002, with Premium package, Cold Package, 6-spd.

The dealer is asking $44,800 (I believe with options the invoice is $39k). With a three year lease with 12,000 miles and $2k down he wants $638 per month.

Ouch.

That is pre-negotiation, so I would ask the board's advice on realistic pricing I could throw back at him.

By the way this is in upstate NY.
Thanks in advance.

Default Hmm.

Am I missing something? A car with the options you've specified should have an MSRP of $41,900. Why are they asking nearly $3K over that? (Or was your quoted price including TT&L?)

Default Hey newbie, WELCOME! 2002's are tough as those of us with orders (me included) just started

receiving them (mine last Friday), others not yet. So no-one has gotten one yet that hasn't had it on order for some time (as far as I'm aware). But here's the advice I can give. I got my 2002 for $1k under sticker, regardless of what options I got. Now Pearl White is an extra charge on all Audis, but is also available on all audis. One option you can use, that is correct as I have just used it to price and buy two new cars in two months (my S4 and my wifes 2001 Jetta) is the TMV at Edmunds.com. TMV stands for True Market Valuator, and it is a service by Edmunds whereby you enter your zip code, and they tell you the price of cars selling in your area, as equipped the way you indicate, based upon customer surveys. I got my S4 for $500 less than that (had purchased 2 cars from the dealer in 3 years), but my wifes Jetta was within $100, and I really SQUEEZED the dealer for every last penny.

There are some differences in pricing I've seen in different parts of the country. For instance, folks out west have gotten their S4s for up to $1,500 less than me, but that may go with the territory. You may also end up paying more for difficult colors (like pearl white), although I don't think you should have to pay more than sticker, but you may not get much off. To give you an example, my dealer had a 2000 Imola Yellow S4, onyx leather, cold weather, premium package, navigation system, 6 speed, and spoiler, with sticker close to $43k. It had 100 miles on it and I had driven it many times while waiting for mine to come in. Some here on the board inquired of my dealer about it, and were shocked that he wouldn't take low 30s for it as it was 2 years old. He always told me he'd sell it in time. Well this past Friday when I was picking mine up, I was waiting for some final prep, and while I was there the car, which was now on the showroom floor, was sold for $39.5k, $3k less than sticker, but well over cost. FOR A 2 MODEL YEAR OLD CAR!! He said it's because Yellow is hard to get right now.

Keep us posted, and good luck. Also, if you narrow down where you live, others may be able to refer you to a dealer, and even a salesman, who will work you a good deal.

Default I think you left out delivery charge, most dealers quote that in the price:

also, most come with the Bose, so I'll assume that's in there also:

Base price: 38,900
Premium 1,200
cold weather 600
delivery 575
Bose 600

Total: 43,075

Nav or CD Changer would be additional

Default Don't forget to add the Pearl White upcharge in there.

Now Paddlefoot's price is starting to look more like an MSRP quote.

Though, I wouldn't say "most" cars come with Bose -- from my experience, it seems like it's almost 50/50. Perhaps it's different in different parts of the country.

Thanks for the great response. I am not positive about the 2002 vs. 2001. Apparently this car just arrived and I assumed it was a 2002. I'll check.

I am from the Utica, NY area.

Default Price seems a bit inflated, but .....

Does the car have Nav or something else? List on the car for 2001 is $40,700, with a 5% increase in price it would be $42,735. I would be suprised if AoA increased their car prices by that much! (anyone know the new prices yet?) So your dealer is sitting up there at @$2k to $3.75K over projected MSRP!

I am not sure about the regional variation, but the invoice prices I have are $34,791 + $528 (cold) + $1,056 (premium) for a total of $36,375. Add @$575 for delivery and you're at $36,950. You know how much over invoice you are willing to pay. I live in the Baltimore/Washington area and am gearing up to make the same move in the near future. The same car with Prem/Cold/Bose looks like it'll be no more than $39,000 (excluding taxes & tags) from the same dealer that I bought my wife's 1.8T from.

You said this was a pre-negotiation price, I think he's checking you for a pulse! (Unless of course the cars sell for that much more in upstate NY.) There are a few NY S4ers in here, they should be able to let you know what's fair in your market.

Good luck, let us know how it works out.

Cheers

Work 'em from invoice pricing up, not MSRP down, just my experience.

With Cold/Prem/Sport Trim/Pearl Paint the edmunds invoice is $38,930. TMV for my area is $42,996.
