Default Looking at a used 2002 S4 and my dilemma...

Yesterday I drove through my local Audi dealer and noticed a S4 on their lot, it was too late to check it out so I went this morning. It is a 2002 S4, 27K miles, silver with silver alcantera, Bose, 6 speed, sun roof. Looks real nice. I'm going back later today to take it for a spin. The price they are asking is $35,900. I guess my questions about the car are, what should I look for or be concerned about with it and does the price seem reasonable? It seems to fall in line with what Edmunds and others are saying.

My dilemma is I also am on the list for a 2004 S4 but am having second thoughts due to the cost. It is looking like base price will be around $45K. Add a couple of options such as Bose (I'd like a hole in the roof but the premium package will add a few K more). So you're probably talking about $46-$47 with destination for the car. There most likely will be a $1000 gas guzzler tax as well as the lovely state of Massachusetts state tax of 5% and then local excise taxes. All in all its going to be close to $5K in taxes on top of the price. No doubt it will be a fanstastic car but I don't know if I want to spend that much extra.

Finally, I've also been looking closely at the upcoming STi. I know its not an Audi but the performance looks real good. I just question the long term longevisty of the car. My wife and I bought a Legacy GT and got rid of it because I disliked it so much and got the Audi A4 Avant that we should have bought in the first place.

Thanks for any input!

Default Seems ok for list, prob. talk down 1K. As far as what to look for. -->

How the car was driven is probably more of an issue if it was chipped or not. Obviously look for signs of body damage, run a CarFax. Ask dealer for a maintenance history for any warantee work that was done.

Default Re: what dealership?

Bill...

I just got a 2000 S4 through Autotrader... they have many S4's listed with various miles and various costs. I got mine for 24,000 with 45k miles... and near mint condition. I would def look around as from what I have read, and my friend that has the 2001 S4, there are minimal changes... so save the money and buy used... just my 2 cents... If you have any other questions regarding used ones you can email me as I have done alot of research on used S4's.

Default 2001.5 and 2002 are the same car, so I wouldn't get too hung up

on it being a MY2002. The price sounds quite high, I paid $25,900 for mine, 38K miles. I really prefer the B5 chasis over the B6 chasis, turbos are more fun, car looks better IMHO, I like the green color much better, and if you want the raw performance it's just an ABT chip away or keep going if you want to stage III. $26K vs $52K is a 200% difference, that's a lot of cash for what I'm not exactly sure...
