For what its worth new development today. Drove the car on an errand, lost first at a stop light. After stalling twice from 3rd and panicking i got it into first and all was normal again. A few miles down the road on a downhill stop sign I tried to go 1st-2nd and it actually went into second, let the clutch go and got on the gas and the car just free revved. Pulled the lever out and back into 2nd as far as i could and 2nd gear worked. tried to pull it out and it wouldnt come out unless i was off the clutch and then it popped out. rest of the gears work, seems like it will only engage second while moving at lower speeds and pulling hard on the lever...now I was almost certain it was the collar but I thought you completely lose 2nd and possibly first if it goes with no way of getting back into either...?!

It could be something as simple as needing a new clutch or the 2nd gear syncronizer is on its way out. Either way, you need to pull the transmission and inspect the clutch/flywheel, throwout bearing.

NEVER fight the transmission, you will break it or the shifting mechanisms. If it won't go into gear, don't force it.

Clutch and flywheel assembly are oem and have 2,000 miles. Wouldn't it do it in every gear if that was the case?

Yeah, when my flywheel went it out it wouldn't go into any gear.
It felt like it was stuck trying to engage a gear, and would grind when I rev'ed.
