lubro moly gear oil

Default lubro moly gear oil

i have been trying to research for the longest time what oil to put in my 00 s4. the only thing i can come up with is to stick with the oem fluid or try this lubromoly 75w90. some ppl said they put it in their cars and it worked fine, BUT i see that it is gl4 and gl5 lubricant. i dont want to damage my synchros with the gl5 but some mechanics said that its fine for our cars. is this better than oem or not worth it??

Default Additives

Not a big fan of additives in any lubrication system. I use 75W90 and have never had any problems. Maintenance is the key, engine,trans,cooling. Regular fluid changes provide better results than the addition of after market additives. This is a personal opinion and, I'm sure others may have different ideas but, everyone is entitled to their opinion and valid arguments could be made for or against additives. Good luck.

OUr Motul Gear300 is a popular choice for both the transmission and differential.

Fully synthetic and GL4 and GL5 so it's safe to use in both applications.

Using molybdenum disulfide powder in my line of work where things need to run "dry", it is a fairly robust "lubricant." However, I think there's too much marketing going on at the second link.

Moly will not plate anything, it will burnish the surface. As an additive, I'm skeptical about it staying soluble in the gear lube at operating temperature and just precipitating out to the bottom before it can do any good. You'd be better off to burnish the gears with MoS2 powder and remove any residual material before assembly. However, there may already be a ceramic coating on the components to begin with to prevent galling in which case the moly may not do much of anything for you. Does anyone know if the gears already have a low friction surface treatment?
