Default LWFW vs OEM resurfaced

I'm going to be doing a clutch upgrade soon and was wondering what the forums thoughts are on the flywheel. I'm debating between the VAST LWFW and just having the OEM resurfaced.

Looking to get the opinions of those that have actually gone from OEM to LWFW, but all opinions are appreciated.

Is the LWFW worth the $300 extra cost?
Is there a noticeable difference in acceleration/rpm w/ the LWFW?

Getting the OEM flywheel resurfaced is a good cost-effective way to add life to a new clutch. That being said, the dualmass, although robust, is not so great for high-power applications.

You will notice a difference with the LWFW, if it's worth 300 is a bit relative. I would recommend upgrading to the LWFW if you can spare the cash.

The LWFW will allow the car to rev much quicker due to the weight savings.

RPMS will drop much faster inbetween shifts with the LWFW also.

Those are the two biggest differences you'll notice.

thanks for the feedback. I guess I should give a little more info on my car.

I have a 2001.5 S4 with the ASP Stage 3 kit (with the K04, fueling, etc) w/ a FMIC. It's was tuned by ASP to 22 psi, tapering down to 20 psi. The current clutch flywheel setup is RS4/Stage 1 w/ the OEM flywheel. So it's fine for daily driving, but i can't take it to the 1/4 mile, or i can, but can't launch the car. I'd like to be able to get in the mid 12's with the clutch/flywheel/shifter/shift components upgrade. I don't race the car regularly, but would like to be able to take it to the track 1-3 times a year without worrying about the clutch.

I'm for sure going with Stage 3 or 4 ($50 difference) VAST clutch kit and shift component/bushing & shifter upgrades. The only thing i need to figure out is the flywheel. LWFW seems to be the best option, just wanted to see what the forum thought.

For the future, I'm going to be living up in Detroit soon, so probably a new tune from VAST as I think they could make it a little more agressive.

right now, the Stage 1 clutch is just annoying the heck out of me cause i know the car is faster than i can currently drive it with that clutch....but i also don't want to have to go back in to do the flywheel/shift components.

My last car was a 3000GT VR4 in which i had a Stage 3 6-puck clutch and Fidanza LWFW, so I am actually aware of the driving difference from OEM to LW.

One factor to consider before going the LWFW route is the rotating assembly balance. The LWFW can throw that off a little, whereas the stock re-surfaced one will not. It's not a big deal, but it is something to think about.

I held off on getting the LW until just recently when I swapped out the stock connecting rods for a forged set. I had to get the assembly rebalanced for that anyway.

Most people could give a flying fu$% about the balancing.

BTW, I have a vast resurfaced flywheel with about 1000 miles on it if anyone is interested. I'll sell it super cheap if anyone is looking for a good deal on a stock dual mass.

So does the VAST 8000 rpm balance that they include with their LWFWs not address the potential balancing issue?

Good point, although the balance is probably limited to the flywheel. The guys at VAST definitely know what they are doing, so if they sell a LWFW you can bet it won't mess up the assembly balance.

I contemplated getting a LWFW. Cost wasn't a concern but feedback I'd gotten was that for a DD it could be less enjoyable than the OEM. I doubt there'd be any meaningful change in performance, aside from the way the car behaves.

Just an update....
Ended up going with the LWFW and while there's a difference in driving, it's not as noticable as I thought it would be. Really like the whole setup though. VAST did a great job!
