Default Morning IAT run for those following my saga - 4.6 FATS

so, I did what flyboy asked for and logged my IATs from the moment my car turned over. The ambient temp was about 63F and the temp in my garage was about 10 degrees higher (my estimate). Then I logged my drive until I got on the FWY, then stopped logging.

I logged the FATS after stopping for coffee and ran the actual log while getting back on the FWY. The car sat for a bit, but I drove for about 3 minutes at 35-45, to get the IATs to come down. Logged 4.6 with the initial IAT at 102F and final at 125F

Default Thats more inline, from most of my logs in 68~74f, i usually see starting point at about 100f

granted kind of always get stuck in some traffic before it opens up! imo you should see IAT starting point at about 85f or so if you cruise for a bit, in other words about 20~25F over ambient looks normal to me!

Shoot me an email or IM me if you want to do some ecux log to see the rest of the variables!

Default He is now ~40F above ambient before ever going WOT. That might be "more inline," but still not right

unless he was sitting in traffic and never cruised before doing his FATS. He said he cruised for 3 min at 35-45 though. <shrug>

The delta across the run was impressive for those starting IATs, though. The AWE ICs seem to shine most there. Then again, we've seen how the IATs react if they start well above ambient...not as much rise.

Default I might have overestimated the time I drove before logging... the car sat for a good

7 minutes in the lot and the temps got up pretty high when I started back up, then I drove the effective distance of 10 blocks maybe and got on the ramp (hit 2 lights on the way)... so...

Default In that case, get some FATS pulls in after a few minutes of high speed cruising next time.

I know it's hard where you live, but give it a try.

I'd also take Anthony up on his gracious offer if I were you. A few ECUx logs will tell you everything you want to know and then some.

Good luck, mang.

Default When the car is sitting, everything along the intake path is

going to be heating up. Once you start to drive the intake air temp is going to be elevated by all those warm pipes until the intake air can draw the heat out of the pipes. That takes a bit of time.

Looking at this chart, what you don't see is that when my car is at a steady cruise the IAT's will stabilize around 15F above the ambient temps. But with stop and go driving, from time 15-30, the whole intake path gets much warmer. After sitting, I drive for 10 minutes and there's still room for the intake temps to come down.

It is what it is, but the thing to keep in mind is that if you want to try and optimize the IAT on a FATS run you should plan on some steady cruising at 50 mph or so for several minutes before the pull.

Default IC

From your graph I would say that those ICs are the weak link.

It looks that when the car is just sitting the IC are getting heated up and since there is no air flow trough them they can't recover. When you drive @50 Mph the flow of air helps the IC recover faster.

I don't agree with you statement that says it's the pipes that are causing the slow recover time. Look at the OT, Bipipe and MAF they are close to each other but the IAT (Intake Manifold and IC) are the main reason why the temp is so high for such a long time.

Do you think if we had a Front Mount IC it would fix or help this problem dramatically or not?

I am thinking it's the efficiency of the IC that needs to be addressed.

Thanks,

Edy

Default I just got the AWE ICs and I think the problem lies in the way I

took the logs, I didn't give the car adequate time to cool off. The IATs drop really quickly while driving. I did some more runs last night and registered around 4.3, so all in all it's not bad.
