MTM exhaust - Audi warranty issues
#11
Well duh. Of course.
If your car doesn't pass emmissions because of the MTM exhaust, then of course its not their responsibility.
People get way to freakin' paranoid on here. Dealers have to say that for a couple reasons: #1, most aftermarket exhausts are *illegal* -- especially in CA. And #2, ITS NOT AUDI'S PART. Why should they warranty it?
Sheesh.

While discussing my "situation"...
I asked specifically what mods are basic and NON-VOIDING. I was told as a start, the wheels and exhaust if I did not touch the cats. (it's a PIPE, after all, with a noise reducer on the end.
This is what is most frustrating, the wide degree of misunderstanding of what truly affects these cars, and what doesn't.

Thankfully, some dealers and OTS are more reasoned than others
A pipe's a pipe. I've discussed all mods with my dealer (same as yours) before hand to get their reaction and understanding.

Were talking about reasonable measures here
I didn't expect my dealer to pay for my alignment or to fix the squeaks my suspension had because I have an aftermarket suspension. I wouldn't expect them to cover a hole in my Forge exhaust either. But components upstream of the cat-back exhaust? Yes I would. especially since o2 sensors do go bad. Warranty the cats? Who cares about that. How are they going to malfunction. It seems like a cowardly act on the part of the dealer. Why even say anything?

*sigh* right back at you.
Whats confusing about this. CAT BACK EXHAUSTS ARE ILLEGAL IN MANY STATES, ESPECIALLY CALIFORNIA. If it doesn't have a CARB number (which *none* of the S4 ones do), ITS ILLEGAL. They CAN'T LEGALLY warranty your exhaust system because for them to do any work on it, and then let you drive off with an illegal exhaust system is ILLEGAL. They can get very hefty fines as a result.
Not only is it reasonable for them to warn you about that, keep in mind in a lot of places in the country, dealers are legally obligated to not work AT ALL on cars that are not street legal, because of the possibility for *very* large fines imposed on them by the EPA or DOT.
Sheesh.

I am fairly sure the legality of exhausts have to do with sound levels...
as that is their MAIN duty. They are a completely passive system, and not related to the emissions in terms of CARB, as the exhaust past the cat have nothing to do with processing or mediating the output of emissions.
In that regard, they are not required to be CARB certified, but MUST meet noise level criteria.
