it's how much extra is not being turned into actual timing. If I have 1 degree of retard across all cylinders across the entire RPM band, and then I add 6 degrees more timing, I'll just be retarding 7 degrees now. Overall timing won't increase. It's like asking how many marshmallows don't fit in your mouth. Whether it's 2 or 8, you still have the same number in your mouth and you're a chubby bunny.

Until I see proof otherwise, that's my belief
