Default Best of Luck, and hang in there....

been through it with my dad twice now. First time back in 86, and then again in 99. It's amazing how far the procedure has come in that time. Hang tough, and keep us posted.

Default I wish your family the best! (more)

My father went through a quintuple by-pass one year ago. He went in for some test and the hospital would not release him. They prepped him and two days later he went under.

To tell you that the surgery is the scariest thing in the world...because it is. However, the technique is so perfected now and is so common...You're father might as well have the common cold.

The worst parts are the wait. When they say he'll be out in 4 hours...it could be longer. When you go to see him for the first time after surgery only two family members can see him at once. At least those were the rules at Hackensack Medical in NJ. Your father will have a huge air blanket to keep him warm (I believe it's warm) and hoses falling to the floor where the blood and urine get pumped into. He'll be yellow and puffy. He won't crap for days. Within 24 hours they move him into intesive care and his bedroom for 4-5 days or so.

Within 2-3 days he'll be walking with an aide. After the 3rd day he'll be walking alone up and down some artificial stairs or whatever the recovery area of cardio has.

They'll have him do breathing exercises during and after when he gets home. When you drive him home bring a pillow so he can put it on his chest so the seatbelt don't hurt him.

Your pops will then go see his cardiologist again for a checkup. Then your father (1-2 months) start a physical therapy program. He'll be as new within 3-4 weeks. No driving however for longer.

Trust me...He'll be ok. I went through the same thing as many other people have.

I hope he likes fish and other healthy stuff. If not he better learn to like it. That's all he will be eating for the rest of his life with the occasional fatty meal at some Italian restaurant and special occasions.

If you want to chat before hand send me an email and I'll give you my phone number.

Tom

Default My father just went thru the same thing

Good luck!

It's pretty amazing how fast they have 'em sitting up and walking after the surgery too.
