My new S4 Avant does not handle as well as my old A4 sedan?
Old car was 2000 A4 1.8tqms sedan w/ 16" sport package and Dunlop Sport 5000 all season tires.
New car is 2001 S4 Avant w/ 17" Conti all season tires.
I assume that extra weight of the S4 engine and extra weight of avant rear area are part of the problem. How much are the Conti tires hurting me? I pumped them up to 40psi and things got a little better. Dunlop Sport 5000s are not available in the S4 size so I may try the Michelin Pilot A/S.

well...you are comparing All-seasons on the S to Summers on the A.....
not to mention the added weight of the S4 Avant. I'd say that as well...that my A4 was more nimble and handled "better" around turns, curves, and twisties...but I'd take my S4 Avant anyday. Remember...you had "sport" suspension on the A4 too, not that it's a great sport set-up, but it is much better than stock. The S4 stock suspension is just waaay too soft and sloppy. Get some suspension...it'll make a world of difference ;-)

When i first got my Avant it took a while to get used to the feel
I realized the handling was actually better then I originally thought when really pushing it, it jsut has a bit of slop and body roll that takes some figuring out.

Slop and roll is a good way to describe it. I am going to measure the rear bar on the avant and
make sure is is the same size as a sedan. Sometimes wagons get smaller bars.

My '99 A4 2.8Q w/sport handled better than my S4 (both w/all season tires w/A4 getting michelins and S4 having sucky Toyo Fz4s). It really depends on the tires though, as when I had S-03s on my S4 it would destroy the A4. S4 feels heavier as well because of the heavier steering and actual weight. Get a stiffer rear sway bar, helped a lot.
