Nav system disappointments (long)

You need to have it set for "-> FASTEST" and "-> FREEWAY"
Go to Settings, then Route Opts.
You route opts display should look like this:
-> FASTEST
-> FREEWAY
-> FERRY
-> TOLL
and not
-> SHORTEST
- FREEWAY
-> FERRY
-> TOLL
"->" means optin on, "-" means option off, except for fastest/shortest, which is always "->" and says "fastest" or "shortest."
Shortest means shortest in mileage, ignoring expected travel time. Also, once you put these settings in, you have to hit "save" then "Calc Route" or it will keep using the old route.
Personally, I find the Nav system is damn near perfect, except for the fact that mine is defective. I've only run into actual navigation problems 3 times (out of about 20 successful uses). One was a programming error (took me to the wrong place entirely). One was that the voice said something different than the display in telling me how to exit a rotary (the display was right, I followed the voice). The last was that I told it there was a traffic jam on I-95, when I was right next to an exit. After it recalculated, it thought I was already on the exit (I was only 5 feet the the left of it)
Here's what you do want:

Here's what you don't want:

As for my defective Nav system, many here have already read my posts. In summary, 2/3 of the time, my Nav system doesn't acknowledge that I'm on a road that it knows. It just sits there saying "please proceed to the nearest road" even if I'm on I-95. GPS works perfectly, Bee-line distance to destination is dead on, and if you pull up the route list, the route it gives you is either exactly right, or it appears to think that you're a few blocks away from where you actually are. Dealer is picking my car up next week to have a look at it.

One more thing that may help:
You may know this already. Once you change your options and have the Nav lady calculate your route, you can go into the listing to see what turns, etc. have been chosen.
Unfortunately, the instructions for doing this are incorrect in the manual. Once the route has been calculated, just press the info button (don't hold it for more than 2 seconds as the manual states). You'll be given two choices. One will be to change options, so you can adjust the "fastest/shortest" etc., the other lists the route. So you can go back and forth seeing how the route changes as you change options and recalculate the route.

Comments on "figuring out" the nav system
Don't feel bad for not being able to intuit the controls on the Nav system. The Nav system is a lot like the vi text editor - the controls are totally unintuitive when it comes to figuring them out. But they are very easy to remember once you've learned them for the first time.
I've had to look up 75% of the capability in the manual (which really sucks), even though I already read the manual cover to cover. It's the kind of thing that you have to try it or it's meaningless to read it.
But now I feel I pretty much have it mastered, and when it works, I feel it does it's job perfectly. In fact, I believe I have actually now used EVERY feature of the system, including re-sorting and deleting entries in my location memory, choosing special destinations, and even entering my current position by hand.
