Need help with tire size on aftermarket wheels
Hi there,
Newbie to the forums and to Audis. Fairly longterm sports car owner.
I just bought the S4 coupla weeks back. I need new tires on the SSR competitions that came with it.
Here's the scenario:
1. Current tire is 225/45/17, same as stock I believe.
2. Wheels are 17X8.5, a full inch wider than stock.
3. What's the max size you guys would suggest that won't rub.
I'm pretty sure I'm easily safe with 235/45/17, but what about 245/40/17, or larger?
I'd hate to continue to let the extra rim width go to waste.

225s will be too thin for 17X8.5s in my experience.
235s should be fine...unless you are running a tire that runs WIDE, like an S03.
You can run 235/45/17s or 234/40/17s....once you hit the 245s, it's hard to discern if you will rub
BTW, I have SSR Comps too. I run 235/45/17 in the winter, and 255/40/17 in the summer/track.

So when you're running 255s at the track/summer, you sometimes experience rubbing problems?
Not sure I understand exactly. It's always some shade of summer here (except for the obligatory one ice day per year - should be this Saturday ), so I'm okay with the lower profile (I'm assuming that's the reasoning for the longer sidewall in winter).
I'm looking at running either Falken Azenis Sports, or Kumho Ecsta MXs. Probably the latter, as the treadwear is better.
Very curious about your 255s now.

I'm in Boston, so I run the 235/45/17s for the higher sidewall
And the 255s are possbile b/c I have RS4 front fenders.
I've had no rubbing issues so far, the rear is more likely to run right now....but I HAD a stock suspension with the 255s. I have dropped the car about 1.25 inchs (not measured yet)....so I'm not sure about rubbing yet.

Re: I'm in Boston, so I run the 235/45/17s for the higher sidewall
Sorry for my ignorance on this (I'm REALLY new here), but the RS4 fenders are an aftermarket appendage, right?
I'm strongly considering going for the 245/40/17s, but will stick to the 235/45/17s if I feel like it'll be detrimental to the car to have the wider rubber that rubs.
Thanks for the patient answers.

No problem....The RS4 front fenders are WIDER than stock
by about 1.5 inches....imagine a widebody kit on an A4/S4
So, If I were you, stick with the 235s. If you want a lower profile tire, go for the 235/40/17....if you want a higher profile tire go with the 235/45/17.
I choose the "45" b/c of the crappy roads in Boston.

Re: No problem....The RS4 front fenders are WIDER than stock
Great. Much obliged. I'll stick with the 235/45s, as roads in my part of Austin (Central) are horrible enough to make me wonder every day where the hell my tax dollars are going.
Thanks for the help. Good to be aboard here. I'm getting used to the format...
