Default Noise From Rear.

I am getting a vibrating noise from the rear of my 01' S-4. It is only when traveling at higher speeds and then letting off the accelerator. It does not make the noise when on the gas. It is fairly loud. It may be more towards the left but I can't tell for sure. Any suggestions? Wheel bearing, Rear Diff????

Default My recent wheel bearing troubles seemed much different.

Cruising on the highway going straight I would not hear a thing. Turning left would cause a loud hum. Turning right would be a slight, harder to notice hum. (Both rear wbs were bad- right worse than left.)

How did you verify that the rear diff was the problem? Did you have it repaired or did you replace it?

If wheel bearing, sound would change if you sway side to side.

Default Ya, while going at a decent clip, let off the gas and turn side to side...

You should hear a definite change in pitch.

My left front is going right now...silent on left turns, what sounds like a buttload of road noise on right turns.

I drove the car again. The noise is still only there when off the gas. The sound does change when abruptly turning the steering wheel. Starting to sound more like a wheel bearing than the diff?

Where is a good place to get replacment wheel bearings from? How big of a job is it to replace? I think I can do it myself. I will just need to take the bearing housing to a shop to have the bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in. I don't have a press.

Default My Mechanic (Sam - HiPo Specialties) Diagnosed And Repaired It..He Owns An Allroad And Hangs Out On

AW Allroad board. He is the owner of a local (to Philly PA) garage and specializes in VAG cars. I haven't had the problem or hear the noise since.
