Not that you should believe everything you read - synthetic oils

uhoh.. OIL DISCUSSION@!%%@!
I've spent waaaayyy too much time looking in to the various oils available out there, and have come to one conclusion: there is ABSOLUTELY no consensus on the frequency of oil changes necessary, and the best oil to use to do it [other than "synthetic"].
Outside of the standard big-brand oils [Halvoline, Castrol, Valvoline, Quaker State, Mobil] and the small-but-big boutique oils [Amsoil, Red Line, Royal Purple] i've found a number of VAG-approved and popular oils that look to be worth a gander..
Motul
* Makes 8100 E-Tech 0W-30 and 8100 Ester E-Tech 0W-40, both VAG-approved oils.
LubroMoly
* Makes Voll-Synthese 0W-40 -- VERY popular with the BMW crowd.
Aral
* Huge in Germany, VAG, Benz, and Porsche approved. They make a number of 0W oils, including SuperSynth 0W-40, SuperTronic 0W-40, and SuperTronic 2 0W-30. Apparently this is the factory fill for a number of German car manufacturers.
One other side note.. Amsoil *does* appear to be good, but is it just me, or do there seem to be a LOT of shills for this company out there?

Thanks for the info. I'll be using a post-1999 ......
Mobil 1 Tri-Sybthetic Blend, 'European Car Formula' motor oil. I just switched to 0W-40 Mobil 1, from 0W-30 Mobil 1.
I have >20 years of excellent equipment survival experience using Mobil 1 in various weights, as appropriate for engine application and environmental conditions.
Mobil was THE company that took Castrol to task for the Castrol 'synthetic' claim.
Amsoil is good, as are other synthetic brands, but I'll be sticking with Mobil 1 in 0W-40.
Read the 'Lubrication References' link at the bottom of the link below.

Why Mobil 1 0W-40 (again)

I've been getting it through a local NAPA auto parts dealer. Just go to their web site for
information on the Valvoline SynPower oils and local dealers.

http://www.valvoline.com</a
