I picked up one of these plastic license plate "brackets" at Advance Auto Parts (disregard the product on the bottom; I ended up using only the top one):

I then bolted the "bracket" from the inside to my tag and applied strips of 3M moulding tape all over:

The end result is pretty clean. The "bracket" is just thick enough to fill the indent of the bumper:
