Default Oil drain plug location question

Is the oil drain plug located in the side of the metal pan like structure that the oil filter housing is attached to? I have been changing oil for 27 years on numerous cars but this setup is new to me as this pan is not below the crankshaft. (1st Audi for me.) Is this some kind of remote pickup or dry sump? What is this panlike structure?
Thanks!

Default On the 2.8 A4 (same block, less fun)...

the drain is forward of the filter. The drain plug you see before removing that plastic shield is not for engine oil.

I'm not a mechanic, but I play one on the web. ;- )
