Default OK one last time...it seems I can't get a straight answer on what tire size to go with BBS CH's

I've got CH's on their way...18" by 8.5" ET35 the car is sitting on Koni Coil overs 13 and 1/8" from hub center to fender...the shocks are set to 50% damping.

I have in the closet Bridgestone S03 Pole positions in 225/40/R18...I have on order (which I can cancel) Bridgestone S03 Pole Positions in 235/40/R18.

Some people claim this tire runs kinda wide...and that 225 is adequate despite 225 being for the most part considered a small size for a 8.5" wide rim because the Bridgestones are wider than normal. I absolutely can't stand the, "cholo" look. For those of you who aren't from SoCal or who aren't familiar...the cholo look is what you get when you put 215 tires on 8.5~9" rims...the side wall it not at all straight...it looks like a cone...all pinched at the top.

I'm concerned about rubbing...but not so concerned that I'm willing to have the, "cholo" look to avoid it. If it's that bad I'll have the front fenders rolled.

Steve S. Says go with 245/35/R18 which IMHO is too wide...but some claim because he has the Toyo Proxes T1S it's more like he's runing a 225 tire cause the Toyos tend to be super skinny tires when compared to say Yoko or Bridgestone. He has rolled fenders and his car is pretty low...it dose not rub.

Juan M. has 19" x 8.5" CH's with 235/35/R19 but his are Toyo T1S as well...he claims no serious rubbing problems unless his car is full of people...he does not have rolled fenders.

So I've got tires in the closet 225/40/R18 and 235/40/R18 on the way...I have time to can the 235's and just keep the 225's. I don't mind sending back the 225's if it means the 235 is the right tire for the job.

Does anyone have any definative answers on this subject...it seems a popular enuf wheel that someone would know.

Every one who says run wide tires...like 235/245 are ALL using the Toyo T1S which is a skinny tire...but could it honestly be so skinny that a Toyo 245 is skinnier than a Bridgestone 235? I kinda doubt that Toyo would jip you that badly on contact patch etc.

Please help me...I'm leaking money all over because of this whole wheel debocle...I'm just about fed up now :-( Between sending wheels back to a certain tuner on my dime...to finding out that the wheel I now want uses a larger tire and having to send the other ones back I'm starting to get just a little ticked off. I've done the 225 tires on a 8.5" wheel bit when Gary the wheel pimp was selling R28's with P7000's on them...and it looked like **** :-( I don't want that now...or ever again.

Regards,

James R.

Default I can't give you a definitive answer, BUT

I've got Pirelli PZero Rossos in 225/40/18 on my CHs (18x8.5, ET35), and when I go to reorder tires next spring, I'll likely go with a set of 235 width tires in the Rossos. The 225s cover the wheel pretty well, but there is zero sidewall protection for the rim. If the S03s run a little wide, I'd use the 225 S03s to maximally reduce your chances of rubbing. I have ET35 wheels, and with Eibach springs over Koni shocks, the rubbing was HORRENDOUS. I have since rolled the fenders and replaced the Eibachs with 500lb Vortrag springs, and I've never rubbed once with this setup, even with 5 people in the car cruising around downtown Seattle. Dunno if that helps you or not...

Default Hmm...

Well here's a pic of some CH's on 225 S03's...see the cover the rim...but that's not protection...it's just covered from an asthetics standpoint.

And the tire looks a little cholo don't you think? The top kinda comes in early. I don't mind rolling the fenders...I kind consider it a given at this point. It's really unfortunate that BBS can't see fit to make a 8" version of this wheel :-(<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/543108.phtml">What do you think?</a></li></ul>

Default Heres a great tool, but you aren't getting answers because its personal preference in the range ...

you are talking about. Here is what I can tell you. I own a set of 225/40/18 S-03's. They are clearly wider in tread width than any other tire I have seen in this size by anywhere from 1/8" to close to 3/8" (I have 8 x 18 ET38 wheels coming this week on which I will mount these tires). I have seen these tires on a 8" wide rim, and they look "perfect". In my estimation, they COULD go on a 8.5" rim, but it would look slightly (and I mean slightly) "stretched" though still within the recommended wheel size for this tire.

There are two issues - proper sizing and rubbing.

Proper sizing - the S-03 in 225 calls for a rim of 7.5" to 9" with a "measured rim width" of 8". the 235 calls for a rim of 8" to 9.5" with a "measured rim width" of 8.5". Therefore, you can go 8's or 8.5's with either tire, but the perfect set up (according to manufacturer's specs) is 8" = 225 and 8.5" = 235.

Rubbing - I have noted a link below which can give you sizing relative to stock. Note that in your situation with 8.5 x 18 ET35 wheels, the outer rim will be 23 MM further out than OEM! I had OEM wheels with AVS sports using 15MM spacers and it rubbed (making the stock config equivalent to 30MM ET) Your proposed set up would be 8MM further out. Unless you keep your suspension very high, my guess is it will rub. Those folks who say they don't rub. may simply have suspensions set high enough the rarely touch, or have their fenders rolled. Personally, I go to the track and hit enough road undulations that rubbing is simply something I don't want to put up with.

Hope this info helps and good luck.<ul><li><a href="http://toy4two.home.mindspring.com/offset.html">http://toy4two.home.mindspring.com/offset.html</a</li></ul>

Default I've got 245/35/18's on my BBS CH's as well...

...and they fit fine with no rubbing. I still have the stock suspension.

Default kinda side shot of the 225/40-18 S-03 on my 18x8.5 CHs

i think you've seen these pics before, but yes the S-03s seem to run wider (and weigh more...bah!) than other equivalent sized tires that I've seen (in person)...225/40-18 Yokohama Paradas (the rim extended farther out than the sidewall) and 225/45-17 P6000s (vs. my 225/45-17 S-03s).

I saw Steve's 245/35-18 Toyos today (him and Audiboy were installing my H&Rs..thanks guys!) and FWIW they looked like they have just about the same amount of tread extending over the rim as my 225/40 S-03s have (even though the Toyos are supposed to be 20mm wider).

Default Those look just about the same as my Rosso's. I personally don't mind

the look too much, but the added protection would be a welcome extra. It might have saved my one slightly curbed wheel from the monkeys at the HAND wash station that had a brain fart and ran my car through the machine washer instead. Stupid rail ran all the way around the lip of the rim, which might have been better protected with a wider tire. Like I said, I'll be doing something wider when the current Rosso's wear out.

And, "yes", I sure as hell wish BBS would give us this wheel in a 8" version. It must be design related, because you can get them in 17" in Europe, and even in that diameter they are still 8.5" wide. In the end, it may be the width of them that convinces me to sell them. I'm looking to order an '02 Avant next spring or summer, and if they don't tuck up into the fender on the new cars better, I think I'll bite the $bullet and step into a set of HRE's in an 8" application with something like a 38 offset. Good luck with your choice.

Default James, I agree with Sir Gorobei

I don't have CH wheels, I have RX, but my pirelli p7000SS 225/40/18 offer 0 (ZERO) lip protection (as in: if you put the wheel on the ground, lip touches before tire).

I think that it depends on the tire though (as funkadelic mentioned in his post), but I don't think you can go wrong with the 235s (I don't think it is possible for them to appear like 225 tires on 6.5" wheels)

best of luck,

regards,
Liam

ps. email me if you want pics of the lip/tires on my RX wheels.

Default WOW, your car's gonna look completely different the next time I see it

Last I saw, it looked stock. Now you have rims and coilovers...I bet it looks sweet!
