Once my brake light comes on, how many miles do I have before I should REALLY replace them?

...but don't worry, they make a really annoying noise, so you know something's amiss.

Depends on how you drive. Like mpwolf said, take a look at the pads.

Rule of thumb on MB is 2500 miles. I dont know if that applys to Audi though.
