Friend's car got stolen. I'm thinking older BMW (Early E36) 3 series or maybe a VW of some sort. This is a girl by the way. Watcha think?

A five speed AWD Subaru Legacy sedan. The most car for the money for sure.

Default not to mention cheap and plentiful parts...

we can pick up entire engines and trannies for $700 from junkyards and other than redoing the gaskets (especially the head gasket) they are perfectly useable.

We found the JC Whittney rotors are better than OEM and they practically cost nothing. As long as someone shops parts, Honda aftermarket replacement parts are dirt cheap. Factory stuff is still largely a joke but we can get new aftermarket fenders for $30!

Default Honda, Toyota, Subaru. Don't overlook certain American cars though...

The reliability is actually good (although not up to Toyota standards yet) and depreciation is higher - you can get a good low mileage car for the price of a high mileage Honda and end up better off cost wise, as the higher mileage car will need more repair over the course of time.

I helped a friend get a clean, low miles '97 Ford Contour instead of an older, higher mileage Honda Accord. His neighbor bought the Accord and laughed at his Contour. The Contour has been bulletproof for the past 2 years and the Honda needed a new tranny last month.

Default I wasn't mentioning that ;-P

Most of the aftermarket stuff for Hondas is pure crap...we've yet to find any meaningful aftermarket stuff that actually increases HP. All the meaningful gains are in ballancing and blueprinting and getting the fuel/air ratio right on a dyno.

Default Unfortunately the used car market reflects this....people ask top dollar for Honda

I've owned a few and they are great transportation.
