Default Paging MarkP (or any other e-code pro) About to do e-codes/city light install.

After visiting <b>EVERY</b> booth at Waterfest looking for e-codes, aboslutely no-one had them! (APR = "We don't carry them", Achtuning = "Sure, it'll be the proverbial 'two weeks' before I can get them", Avalon = Forget it, they are on International back-order", AWE = well I couldn't get to the table at their booth, were they giving something away?)

I called AWE on Monday, and the answer was, "Sure, and since it's before 1:00, I can get them in the mail today!"

So I order the e-code housings and the city light wiring kit. I am undecided whether I want the city lights to come on along with the corners anytime the running lights are on...(one click up on stalk), and the corners to be illuminated and go brighter for the turn signals. This would be ok as long as te city lights are a good match to the Xenons. Or, if I want them to be true euro's..see below.

Now I need to make sure I have everything before I start the install...

In no particular order...

<b>City Lights</b>
Which are a better match to the Xenons, the SPP 80w HyperWhte high beams &amp; SPP 100w HyperWhte fogs? <a href="http://www.tantrumwerks.com/html/lights.html">Tantrum Works?</a>, <a href="http://www.ledtronics.com/ds/bf304-yw/default.asp">LEDTronics</a> (seem to have better longevity at least on older sets), or <a href="http://www.pgperformance.com/old/minibulbs.htm">PG Performance</a> which sells the corner bulbs as well...?? If I wire them in tandem with the corners and so that they stay on with the Xenons, they need to match.. (Mark, your wiring schematic leaves the city lights on with the xenons <b>and</b> the corners, correct?

I believe NY requires that you have an amber runnig light. I can gamble on a white bulb for daily driving, but want to be able to pass inspection..so if I were to wire the city lights so they are on <b>instead</b> of the corner bulbs, is there any reason I can't just pull the clear city bulb and replace it with an amber city bulb for inspection?

<b>Corner Bulbs</b>
If I want clear corner bulbs illuminated as running lights and then flashing for turn signals, I'll need a dual filament bulb. PG Performance has bulbs but neither the Osram nor the Phillips Silvervision are dual filament so these are out.

I currently have a set of clear dual filament Phillips bulbs that are pretty dim when on and flash bright as turn signals..these could work in the short term, and they don't require new bulb holders, but the dim running lights will look dumb next to the Xenons and city lights. Is there a better/brighter option, and if so will I need bulb holders?

Mark's writeup doesn't call for a relay if the corners and city lights are on at the same time. Is a relay required to run the city lights as surrogate corner lights? Or can I just <a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/1791955.phtml">do this</a>??

STFA for two days and think I have a good grip...what am I missing?

Default Not true, you just need to know where to find it!

yes, this is a repost.

The tough part is that Audi located the blinker fluid reservoir in a very inconvenient location, from a service standpoint. It's a real pita to refill.

Default Michael....

I used/needed relays only because I wanted to do some odd functionality. If you merely want the city lights to come on at the same time as corner lights, or instead of corner lights, you can just wire them in addition, or instead of the normal bulb wiring.

I wanted, and implemented, the following:
first click: City Lights only
second click: OEM (City lights off, corner lights on, xenons on)

While the following diagram doesn't perfectly reflect the setup, it does show the connections and the basic functionality. That is, when the xenons get power (ie second click is selected on light stalk), the relay moves such that now the power normally (in my wiring) headed to the city lights *instead* goes to the corner lights.

<img src="http://ctny.audiworld.com/mark/s4/euros/dsc01704.jpg">

It's pretty easy to do whatever light combo you want with one relay, so if there's something specific you want, just let me know.

I chose the above because I wanted an ability to have just the city lights on (when I'm out before dark and just want to pimp the Avant), but I also wanted the safety/legality of having the normal amber corner lights on when the headlights were on at night. I didn't see a need to have the city lights on as well in that situation, so I opted to turn them off (when the xenons and corner lights are on).

I also wired DAP's lights, but in his case he chose to have the first click illuminate both the city lights *and* the corner lights. At the second click, the xenons would come on, the city lights would turn off, and the corner lights would remain on. So, we had the same "second click", but slightly different for the first click. Both methods used one relay per headlight.

Want something different? Just let me know, and I'll draw it up for you.

Default hhmm..gotta think about this....

Thanks for the details and the help...!!

So if I install per your writeup, I get...what you've got? I like that.

I see no reason for having the city lights on with the xenons, and I prefer the corners being on when the headlights are on.

Can you comment on bulb selection? What are you using?

Mark, the only other combination I like better than what you describe would be this...

First click on stalk - city lights, and ability to turn on fogs.

Second click, city lights off, corners and headlights on, and ability to turn on fogs.

Return to start on stalk, turns off all exterior lights including fogs.

So I would be 99.9% there with your mod with the exception of all lights + including fogs (did fog light mod already).

Last, did all this really take 7 hours?

Default I assume you meant...

When you said "So I would be 99.9% there with your mod with the exception of all lights + including fogs (did fog light mod already)."

I assume you mean the exception is related to when you want to turn everything off?

I'd have to give that some thought. The fog light mod is related to that other relay. One of the input signals into that other relay is the xenon light power. When the xenons have power (are on), this signal allows the fog light relay to function. Thus, when the xenons are off, you can't turn on the fogs. The mod changes that signal line. Instead of the fog relying on the xenons to be on, it is instead connected to accessory power. So now, whenever the car is on, the foglights can operate.

Would you still want the fog lights to be able come on even without any other lights on? If not, then you could change that input to the fog relay so that it was the taillight signal. This way, you have to have the taillights on (either click one or two) for the fogs to operate, and thus when you turn the stalk to the off position, it would also turn off the foglights.

I'd have to give some thought to a way that you could allow accessory power to enable the fogs to come one whenever (at first), but then when you turn the light stalk off, it would turn off the fogs. It'd take more than just a simple automotive relay. I think there's a way to wire up two so they act like a "latch" relay. I'll play around tomorrow.

Let me know how you want the fogs to operate when there are no other lights on (stalk in off position)

Oh, I have no idea on bulbs - I'm using whatever came with mine.

Default Don't go crazy with it....

You are correct in you interpretation. If I follow your instructions that will get me to 99.9% of what I want. I can handle turning the fogs off manually.

Now, can I assume that if I wire exactly as you did that I'll get the same result? You didn't change anything since doing the install did you?

Anything special with the relay? It looks like you mounted it inside the housing correct? And of course, it's one for each housing, yes?

I think the only part I am missing is in your instructions is <a href="http://ctny.audiworld.com/mark/s4/euros/dsc01788.jpg">adding the wires to the harness</a>. What pieces will I need to purchase if I don't want to canibalize the stock housings?

thanks!!
