The difference in width is 1.75"!!! This is due more to the rim fitting the tire appropriately and this extra 1" of width being combined with the extra width of the tire.

235's are Sumitom HTRZ-II's, 225's are Pilot Alpins (more)
Yep, you are right, different manufacturers can have different sized "same size" tires, but if you check out the measurments at tirerack.com, you will see both of these sizes are pretty neutral.
Tire differences often run 2-5%, but not 20%. Two tires of the same brand would offer the same rough difference. The Pilot Alpins do not run short or narrow, as do the Wintersport M2's, and the Sumi's fall right in the middle (some yoko's and nitto's run large, some bridgestones in particular run small).
As for the size, I have run 235/45-17's since day one. They do not rub, handle very well (this combo hanldes 3.7 seconds faster per lap than the RE-040's I had from the factory), offer nice ride quality, and they fill up the wheel wells much better, without looking too tall.
At every audi meeting, everyone always asks me what suspension I'm running and why the car stands so cool, and it's the damn stock suspension. The wider stance of the R-28's and the larger/wider tires give the car a much more aggressive look.
Also, regardless of the +3% difference is profile, the factory speedo is within 1mph at 60 and 2 at 120mph. I have confirmed this with my radar gun and my garmin color street pilot.

wow, cool news to me...
i was curious to know if anyone was running that combo as well in 18s. i wanted to grab some 235.45.18s for my ABT A25s, and not have any rubbing issues.
so it seems this also fills the wheel well nicely too, which is great esp if one is to stick with the stock S4 suspension...hmmm, great info thanks for the comments! =)

I think if you run a 235/45/18 your speedometer will be off by too much...
Around a 5% difference between stock size of 225/45/17 and 235/45/18. Probably should run a 235/40/18 which will be about a 1.7% difference in size.
Thinner sidewall of the 235/40/18 makes suspension more necessary for asthetics but you shouldn't have any rubbing issues with 235s on stock suspension.

kent you are true too...
if i stick with the stock suspension, i figured a 235.45.28 will reduce the gap a lil bit, not much but a bit.
but if i go with the ABT coilovers i will for sure go with 235.40.18s.
anyone running 245.40.18s on a stock suspension? will the speedo be off badd too with this combo? 245s will be ok on a 8.5" width wheel, no?
