The car is now an out & out sports car. It feels much stiffer than my Euro M3 sedan. The exhaust note is soul stirring, a low rumbling bass at low revs with a bit of Porsche flat six thrown in & a banshee wail as it reaches 8000rpm. The throws have been shortened compared to my Euro M3's six speed box.
I drove 300 km's to fetch the car & on the way back was racing my Euro M3. Contrary to what the magazines say, the E46 has got more torque low down than the previous 321 hp M3. Howver, higher up it was very sluggish & my 'old' M3 would rev more freely to the redline. I put that down to the car only have 36 km's on the clock when I fetched it. It felt very tight but started to loosen up after I hitting some serious velocities (see pic below).
BTW, I got stopped by the cops doing 189 km/h (118 mph) & they wanted to give me a $2500 fine & lock me up. Fortunately, bribery & corruption reign supreme in our country & $40 later I was back on the road (our roads are long & straight with no traffic & even less cops).
The brakes are absolutely awesome. You can feel the car squatting from the rear as well whereas my other M3 feels as if just the front is squatting.
I got spoilt when I had the S4 because I got used to that effortless torque on part throttle in 6th gear at low revs. I found that the 6th gear in my '97 M3 was useless. However, the new M3 seems to pull better at low revs in 6th (maybe it's the new 3.62 differential) using part throttle especially with the Sport button on. It's still no match for the S4 in a low rev lugging contest but it appears to have a lot more effective torque than before.

Pics of E46 M3

Depending on the country... it could very well just be part of every day life. I've done it before
albeit not in the US. *shrug* it's not taken as a big deal in a lot of places.
