I had a big grin while driving it. The engine/exhaust sounds awesome and it's got all sorts of power, but the looks just aren't there - for me at least...

pics of the Z8 I drove (on my website)

I like looking at weight to HP ratios and also factoring in torque.
New M3 is 10.25lbs:1HP & 262 lbs torque
S4 is 14.37:1 & 258 lbs torque
E36 M3 is 13:1 & 236 lbs torque
I am amazed at how fast the S4 is with how heavy it is. People on here are always talking about how the S4's torque is available from 1800 rpm on while the M3's comes on at higher RPM. This is very important in daily driving around town. In a stoplight race, noone is launching at 1800 RPM (and winning) the M3 driver should be launching right in their torque range also. On a track, forget about torque being important all the way from 1800 RPM. I'm never at 1800 RPM on a track, unless I shift from 1st to 4th oops. You would always be within the M3 (or a 911's) torque range.
I'm just an A4 owner and I prefer our cars looks to "their" looks. I really wanted to buy an S4 a month ago, but I was shocked at how heavy the car felt handling and steering-wise. I still might get one... M3's out cuz I need 4 doors.

...ceteris paribus, the S4 needs to be heavily modified to run with a new M3. I would say it needs AT LEAST (probably more)
:
1) Intake
2) Exhaust
3) Chip
Like the E39 M5, the E46 M3 is a beast! Never underestimate these cars, especially with a capable driver at the wheel.

and that holds true especially for all kinds of design. I can understand a hint or two, but I think BMW really kicked the can when they did the nose and *** job.
Driving wise, I'm sure it's nice, but us visual guys need a bit more.
Only if they shoehorned that engine into a TT coupe.
