Probably paranoid, but does it matter whether the t belt guard sits in relation to the serp idler?

Default Probably paranoid, but does it matter whether the t belt guard sits in relation to the serp idler?

In this picture, the serp idler (fan pulley) is behind the vibration damper t-belt guard. There seems to be a little space cut into the fan pulley where this guard sits on top of it. My question is if it's ok to install the fan pulley so that it is on top of the t-belt guard (i.e., the plastic guard would be behind the metal - basically opposite the way it is in the picture)? I did this because the guide said to install the t-belt guard first, then the fan pulley. What this did was push the plastic guard back some, and I couldn't get it out it front, so I just left it. My only concern is that the plastic guard will rub on the t-belt idler wheel that sits behind it. Even if it did rub, I'm not sure this would cause any damage - wouldn't it just eat away the plastic until it spun freely without rubbing?

Anyway, I'm not sure the way it is supposed to go. The car is still on a lift, but I've re-installed the lock carrier, so it has some work to do to get it back to where it was so I could put it on the other way (pulley then guard).

Should I re-do it or I am just paranoid?

Default I remember the same dilema when reassembling mine. Previous

photos saved the day.
My 2cents...
First you need to determine if it's actually rubbing. Can you get a wrench on the Crank Pulley nut with the Carrier in place? Turn and listen.
If it is rubbing I would say besides wear, another issue is will it interfere with the belt tracking? That one alone would probably lead me to fixing it.
Good luck
Tony

So the belt cover is supposed to be on top?

Default Plastic goes behind. If you leave the plastic tab in front of the idler bracket it will rub on the

crank pulley.

There is plenty of room between the plastic and T-belt when placed behind the bracket. Trust me I had the same question but figured it out.

I can't recall, but relief in the tensioner mount sure makes it look like the plastic goes in front

Oops. I guess maybe that's a *raised* edge on the aluminum mount

Plastic goes behind. Plastic rubs on crank pulley if left in front.

Yep it's deceiving. Plastic goes behind. Plenty of room for timing belt.
